Despite its name, the maned wolf is not a wolf at all, nor is it a fox, coyote, or dog. It is the only member of the Chrysocyon genus, making it a truly unique animal, not closely related to any other living canid. One hypothesis for this is that the maned wolf is the last surviving species of the Pleistocene Extinction, which wiped out all other large canids from the continent.

My eye caught a dark form lying on the river bottom. It took me a few moments to comprehend what I had stumbled upon. Lying peacefully in the shallow waters of the river, only a few meters from shore, was a full-grown cougar. The contrast between the serenity of the scene I was witnessing and what must have played out here in the cougar’s final moments made me shiver. It was the first shiver of many, as I stripped down and waded out into the icy water to get this shot. x

Some Photos | I took a little time this weekend to visit the newly opened Oceanarium here. I’ve always had a somewhat morbid fascination with the sea - both absolutely terrified of and highly interested in it in the same instant. Curious creatures. Monsters of the deep! I could watch those organic almost Tron-like jellyfish pulse in the water for hours. Not to mention the sharks. And my friends still wonder why I refuse to spend a lovely afternoon swimming by the beach, oblivious to the beings lurking in the depths beneath…
